New Puppy Checklist: What to Buy for a New Dog

Congratulations on your new dog! The excitement is big – and so is the shopping list. So you don't forget anything (or buy things you don't need), here's everything a new puppy or dog needs, in order of importance.

The basics – before your dog arrives

• A collar with a name and phone tag – for puppies and small dogs, a soft leather collar for small dogs.

• Food and water bowls – a fast eater will benefit from a slow feeder bowl.
• Age-appropriate food – at first, keep feeding what your dog ate before, and switch gradually.
• A bed – a quiet spot of its own, like a sponge bed with a removable cover that's easy to wash.

Potty and cleaning

• A washable pee pad for the first weeks, until your puppy learns to go outside.
• Dog poop bags and a leash bag dispenser so you always have some on you.
• An enzyme cleaner for accidents (it breaks down the smell, so your dog won't return to the same spot).

Toys and play

• A puppy chew toy – puppies lose their baby teeth and chew everything. A teething chew toy directs chewing to the right object.
• A soft toy for comfort and play.
• A puzzle game or snuffle mat – tires the mind and calms.

Training

• A training clicker and a treat pouch – for positive training from day one.
• A foldable gate to close off areas of the home while your puppy learns.

Grooming

• A brush suited to the coat type.
• A nail clipper with a safety guard.
• An absorbent towel for rainy days.

In the first week

• A vet visit: general check-up, vaccines and deworming. In many countries, dogs must be microchipped, vaccinated against rabies and licensed by the local authority — check your local rules.
• Set a routine: fixed times for meals, walks and sleep.
• Gradual introductions to people, sounds and new places – this is the most important time for socialization.
