Small Dog Harness Guide: How to Choose the Right Size and Type

Small dogs have delicate necks and sensitive windpipes, which is why many vets and trainers recommend walking them on a harness rather than just a collar. A harness spreads pressure across the chest and shoulders and gives you better control without pulling on the neck. But a badly sized harness can rub, slip or let your dog wriggle free in the middle of the street. Here's everything you need to know.
Step 1: Measure your dog (don't guess by weight)
Weight is only a rough guide. What matters is chest girth:
- Chest girth – measure with a soft tape around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs.
- Neck girth – where the collar usually sits.
- Compare with the size chart on the product page. If your dog is between sizes, choose the larger one and tighten the adjustable straps.
The two-finger test: with the harness closed, two fingers should fit between the harness and the body. Less is too tight; more and your dog may slip out.
Step 2: Choose the type
- Breathable mesh vest harness – soft, light and especially comfortable for small dogs and puppies, and great in hot weather. For example the breathable mesh harness & leash set or the reflective vest harness for small dogs.
- No-pull harness – with a chest attachment ring. When your dog pulls, it gently turns them back towards you. Ideal for eager walkers, like the saddle-style no-pull harness.
- Padded harness with a handle – gives you a quick grip when you need to lift or stop your dog, like the padded no-pull chest harness.
Step 3: How to put a harness on a small dog
- Open all the buckles and lay the harness on the floor.
- Let your dog sniff it and reward with a treat, so the harness becomes something positive.
- Slip the head through (or the legs, for a step-in vest), close the buckle and check the two-finger test again.
- For the first few days, leave the harness on for a few minutes at home before going out so your dog gets used to it.
- Re-check the fit every few weeks, especially with fast-growing puppies.
- For evening walks, choose a harness with reflective strips.
- In the car, clip the harness to a dog car seat belt – never the collar.
