How to Get Your Dog to Sleep in Its Own Bed and Off the Couch

Does your dog jump on the couch the second you get up, or insist on sleeping in your bed? That's natural: the couch is soft, smells of you and sits right in the middle of the action. For your dog to move to a bed of its own, that bed has to be at least as attractive as the couch – and you have to be consistent.
1. Choose a bed your dog will love
- The right size – your dog should be able to stretch out fully.
- Comfort – a 3D sponge bed supports the joints, and a soft flannel mat suits dogs who like to sprawl.
- By season – in summer a cooling mat, in winter a self-heating pad and a soft blanket. A dog that's too hot on its bed will look for the cool floor or the couch.
2. Put the bed in the right place
Dogs want to be near you. A bed in a distant room will lose to the couch. Put it in the living room, next to the couch, and if needed a second bed in the bedroom.
3. Teach a "place" command
- Toss a treat onto the bed and say "place".
- When your dog steps on – praise and another treat.
- Gradually ask it to lie down and stay a few seconds, then a few minutes.
- Practice a few times a day, briefly.
4. Don't reward the couch
When your dog gets on the couch, don't shout: gently lift it down, guide it to its bed and reward it there. If one person allows the couch and another doesn't, your dog will be confused. Everyone at home needs to follow the same rules.
5. Block access when you're out
While your dog is learning and no one is watching, close off the living room with a foldable gate or put something on the couch that stops it climbing up.
6. Tire your dog out before bed
A dog that has burned off energy falls asleep faster in its own spot. An evening walk and 10 minutes on a snuffle mat work wonders.
FAQ
What if my dog cries at night?
It's common with puppies in the first days. A bed close to you, a piece of clothing with your smell and a fixed routine help. If an adult dog suddenly becomes restless at night, check with your vet.
Is it OK for the dog to sleep with us?
That's your call. What matters is being consistent, so your dog understands what's allowed.
